Buying Local in Puget Sound

Jump to: Dairy. Chicken&Eggs. Grains. Bakeries

We have so many local resources available to us and many people wonder how we can support local and buy local.

But sometimes we just don’t know how to access the local goodness that is available to us.

We’ve compiled a list based on discussions with locals and research. Stand by as we visit each of these farms and locations to create a dedicated page with more details. We’re also linking to any of their business sites if they have one.

If you know of any local farms that are not listed here, please get in touch with us!

Remember to support locals, they are hardworking families who are happy to help provide you with what you need and create a sense of community. When you buy local you know where your food comes from, you know how they’re grown and how the livestock is raised and kept, and you know they haven’t added pesticides or antibiotics into their feed. And the cherry on top? You can avoid all the unnecessary packaging and reduce your footprint in the process.

There is nothing more enriching than buying local and supporting your local farmers, workers, families, and artists.

Please share any local choices you know

List of Local Grain Farmers

GRAINS

Skagit, Island, and Snohomish counties are unfathomably rich in grain farms. We can buy almost all our grain needs, from flour to oats from local farms and farmers.

Cairnspring Mills

One of the first phrases you notice on their website and physical “Making every day earth day” and you know they are all business! They source all the grains from local farmers in the Skagit Valley who follow regenerative growing methods, and mill them on-site to produce the tastiest and wholesome flour mixes you can think of. It’s good for the locals, the earth, and you. You can order your flour online and pick-up from their distribution. Make sure to go to their website and learn about the variety of different flour they provide and what they are best used for.

List of Local Bakeries

Baked Goods

There are a select few bakeries who exclusively source their flour and grains from local farmers.

Schuh Farms - Mount Vernon, WA

A beautiful family farm since 1962! They started with strawberries and now provide everything else too! From baked goods, to locally sourced veggies year round to even ice cream and espresso! Strongly suggest to pay a visit!

The Breadfarm - Bow, WA

They are one of our favorite bakeries in the area. Original. They’ve been here since 2003 and survived the pandemic although, apparently, their operations were seriously impacted. Their philosophy is to always source locally, all grains and other ingredients to serve the most delicious and quality of sophisticated breads. Check-out their site at 7am daily to place in your daily pick-up order..

In all of 2022, since we’ve discovered them, they’ve served their breads through a window, with no indoor space or option.

Apparently this is changing in 2023 and we cannot wait! Stay tuned!

Shambala Bakery - Mount Vernon, WA

“We source local so you can too” is literally their motto! How can we go wrong with that? This is a place you need to stop by in the town of Mt Vernon. They source local and they offer gluten-free and vegan options! Their breads and baked goods are delicious.

Water Tank Bakery - Burlington, WA

One of Skagit Valley’s hidden secrets, right behind the Skagit Airport. It’s simple, they make sourdough bread, cookies, and cake. Their bread is to die for. They source their ingredients from the mill next door - Cairnspring Mills. The owner is local from La Conner. Order online and pick-up in store, must order 48hrs in advance, their schedule is available online. That’s how all the stars align to get your 100% locally sourced bread!
